A great way to show pride for our country is by displaying an American flag. This craft is an excellent way for younger kids to get into the holiday spirit by making their very own flag.
This craft would also be perfect to set out on a table during a backyard party or barbecue this year. Simply set out the coloring page templates with some crayons and let the kids get creative. It’s a great way to keep them entertained while waiting for lunch or dinner to be ready.
Or for when they need a little break from running around!
Supplies needed:
- Free printable coloring page (the download link is located at the bottom of this post.)
- White printer paper or cardstock
- Crayons (specifically red and blue)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Construction paper
How to assemble the flag:
The first step is to print out the flag template onto white printer paper or cardstock.
Once printed, it is time to start coloring! I’ve labeled which stripes should remain white and which should be colored in red. The background behind the stars should be blue and the stars themselves should remain white.
After everything has been coloring in, grab some scissors and begin cutting along the dotted lines.
If your kids are able to safely use scissors, this would be a great time for them to practice their scissors skills. If not, you can assist and they can still safely participate in the next step.
Now it is time to being assembling the flag. Take out a piece of construction paper for the background and start by gluing down the star section towards the top left of the page.
Note: The long edge of the star section should be facing the top and the short end should be on the side.
Next, start with a small red strip and place that next to the star section. After this, keep alternating short red and white strips until you get to the bottom of the star section.
Keep continuing the red and white pattern, but this time use the longer strips of paper.
After all thirteen of the stripes have been glued to the page, your flag is now complete! Feel free to hang it up around the house, classroom or anywhere else that needs some patriotic flair!
Favorite Printable Supplies:
These are a few of my favorite supplies that I use for printable games and activities:
- White Cardstock: For most projects, I recommend printing onto cardstock. It is much more durable than standard printer paper and often produces a higher quality print.
- Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top notch choice!
- Kid Friendly Safety Scissors: These are perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
- Glue Sticks: These disappearing purple glue sticks are by far my favorite! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often!
- Lamination Machine: Laminating printables are a great way to make them last longer. If you are planning on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to get a bunch of dry erase markers as well.
- Dry Erase Pockets: Dry erase pockets are a great alternative to using a lamination machine when wanting to make printable games and activities reusable.
- Printer: A high quality printer is always recommended for the best results. If you are in need of a printer this Brother Wireless Printer is a great choice.
