This printable hand puppet is a super fun and interactive craft for the upcoming 4th of July holiday. Whether you are planning on making this at home or at a party, it will definitely be a big hit with the kids!

Supplies needed to make the Uncle Sam puppet:

  • Free printable template (the download link is located at the bottom of this post)
  • White cardstock (standard printer paper would work as well, but cardstock is highly recommended)
  • Markers, crayons or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape

How to put together the puppet:

Step 1: Print out the template.

Download the Uncle Sam puppet from the link at the bottom of this post. Once downloaded, you can print the template out onto an 8.5×11 inch piece of white cardstock.

While you can also use regular printer paper, I would definitely recommend using white cardstock instead. The final puppet will be much more durable and be able to withstand being played with for much longer.

Step 2: Color in the puppet.

Using crayons, markers, colored pencils or any other art supplies you have around the house, begin to color in the puppet. You don’t have to color in the two rectangles on the side of the template. These will become the handles and will not be seen from the front.

Step 3: Cut out the pieces of the template.

Next, cut out Uncle Sam and the two rectangles on the side of the template.

Step 4: Fold the puppet.

Once everything is cut out, you can begin folding the puppet along the grey dotted lines. After folding, you should only be able to see Uncle Sam’s face. His mouth should remain hidden when the puppet is closed. Make sure to also fold the two rectangles that will become the puppet’s handles.

Step 5: Add on the two handles.

Using glue, secure the two handles to the top and bottom of the puppet’s mouth. You can also use tape if you don’t have any glue handy. When you put your hand into the handles, the puppet’s mouth should easily open and close.
