This printable puppet is a fun and interactive craft that would be a great rainy day activity to keep the kids entertained. Make multiple puppets and create a variety of beautiful mermaids.
Materials needed:
- Free printable puppet template (the download link is located at the bottom of this post.
- White cardstock (which regular printer paper would also work, I highly recommend cardstock for the best results).
- Markers, crayons or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
How to assemble the puppet:
First, download the mermaid puppet from the link at the bottom of this page. Once downloaded, print out the template onto a standard piece of 8.5×11 inch piece of white cardstock.
While regular printer paper would work as well, I would highly recommend using cardstock if you have some available. The puppet will be much more durable and better able to withstand being played with
Next, color in the mermaid. Using markers, crayons or colored pencils, start coloring in the template. There are two rectangular handles on the lefthand side of the page. You can color these in if you would like. However, if it not necessary as they will not be seen from the front.
Using scissors, cut out the mermaid as well as the two rectangular handles.
Once everything is cut out, start folding the puppet’s mouth along the dotted lines. If folded correctly, you should only be able to see the mermaid’s face. Her mouth will be hidden while the puppet is closed and open when you open your hands in the handles.
Make sure to also fold the two rectangular handles on the dotted lines as well.
Finally, using glue or tape, attach the two handles to the top and bottom of the back of the mermaids mouth. When you place your hands into the handles, the puppet’s mouth should open and close easily.
Favorite Printable Supplies:
These are a few of my favorite supplies that I use for printable games and activities:
- White Cardstock: For most projects, I recommend printing onto cardstock. It is much more durable than standard printer paper and often produces a higher quality print.
- Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top notch choice!
- Kid Friendly Safety Scissors: These are perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
- Glue Sticks: These disappearing purple glue sticks are by far my favorite! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often!
- Lamination Machine: Laminating printables are a great way to make them last longer. If you are planning on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to get a bunch of dry erase markers as well.
- Dry Erase Pockets: Dry erase pockets are a great alternative to using a lamination machine when wanting to make printable games and activities reusable.
- Printer: A high quality printer is always recommended for the best results. If you are in need of a printer this Brother Wireless Printer is a great choice.
