What is a cootie catcher?

A cootie catcher is a classic origami game that’s also sometimes called a fortune teller. When I was younger, my friends and I used the two names interchangeably—and kids still love playing with them today!

How do you play?

To play, start by choosing one of the four outer flaps. These are often labeled with colors or Valentine’s Day–themed images. If you choose a color, spell out each letter while opening and closing the cootie catcher.

Next, you’ll see four numbers. Pick one and count up to it as you move the folds again. Then choose one final number and lift the flap to reveal a sweet Valentine’s Day joke!

This Valentine’s version adds a fun holiday twist that makes kids laugh while practicing spelling, counting, and following directions.

How to Fold a Fortune Teller

Growing up, my friends and I made cootie catchers all the time—I even thought of myself as a bit of a pro! After not making one in years though, I quickly realized I needed a little refresher.

If you’re in the same boat, don’t worry. Follow the simple steps and graphic below for an easy folding tutorial. These instructions are also printed directly on the bottom of the cootie catcher printable.

  • Step 1: After cutting out the cootie catcher, place it artwork-side down on a flat surface. Fold each corner into the center of the page.
  • Step 2: Flip the paper over and fold all four corners into the center again.
  • Step 3: Turn the page over so the folds are facing down.
  • Step 4: Repeat the process by folding each corner into the center one more time.
  • Step 5: Finish by folding the paper in half horizontally and then vertically.

That’s it! Your fortune teller is ready to go—now it’s time to open it up and enjoy all the silly Valentine’s Day jokes inside

Favorite Supplies:

These are a few of my favorite supplies that I use and LOVE!

  • White Cardstock: For most projects, I recommend printing onto cardstock. It is much more durable than standard printer paper and often produces a higher quality print.
  • Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top notch choice!
  • Kid Friendly Safety Scissors: These are perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
  • Glue Sticks: These disappearing purple glue sticks are by far my favorite! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often!
  • Lamination Machine: Laminating printables are a great way to make them last longer. If you are planning on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to get a bunch of dry erase markers as well.
  • Dry Erase Pockets: Dry erase pockets are a great alternative to using a lamination machine when wanting to make printable games and activities reusable.
  • Printer: A high quality printer is always recommended for the best results. If you are in need of a printer this Brother Wireless Printer is a great choice.
