7 DIY Velcro Boards – With Free Printables

I’ve created 7 DIY velcro boards designed for toddlers. Featuring letters, numbers, shapes, food and more, your kids will have a blast working on these fun puzzles.

Every night at dinner, I have to try and figure out a creative way to keep my son sitting at the table long enough to take a few bites of food.

He’s two and a very busy two year old at that! He’s got things to do and people to see!

We were at an appointment once and the doctor brought out this simple board with some velcro dots on it. She then gave my son a bag of dinosaur pictures with a velcro dot on the back.

It was such a simple idea but this kept him entertained and happy throughout the whole appointment! Needless to say, I went out and bought supplies to make my own that very day.

And so today I wanted to share these 7 DIY velcro boards with free printables that you can download and put together today.

Here are a few reasons I LOVE these velcro boards

Easy to clean:
As I mentioned, my intention for these boards was to have something for my son to do during dinnertime that would keep him at the table for longer. Since these boards are laminated and dinnertime can get quite messy, it’s really great that I can easily wipe off any excess food that gets on the board or puzzle pieces.

Easy cleanup and storage:
I love puzzles and my son has a ton of them. The thing I don’t like about puzzles though, is the cleanup and storage of them. I honestly don’t think there is one puzzle in my house that isn’t missing a piece or two.

Whether under the couch or “accidentally” flushed down the toilet, pieces go missing. It can be really hard to get them to stay in place when you put them away for the night as well.

But with these velcro boards, that isn’t a problem at all! Simply stick the pieces to the board when you’re ready to put the puzzle away and you can be sure that they won’t fall off or get lost.

7 DIY Velcro Boards for Kids

All download links for the boards and pieces are located at the bottom of this post.

Feel free to download and print as many copies of the boards and pieces as you would like. However, please do not edit or redistribute the files in any way. These velcro boards were designed for personal use only.

Supplies Needed:

How to assemble:

  1. Print the board and piece files onto white cardstock.
  2. Using a home lamination machine, laminate both the board and puzzle piece sheets.
  3. Cut out the puzzle pieces. Feel free to leave some excess white on the edges or even just cut them out in circles, they don’t have to be cut out perfectly! (Especially if you’re using the star velcro board. It will be better to just cut a circle around the star so there aren’t so many sharp pointy edges(.
  4. Place one type of velcro dots onto the circles on the board. (If using the same velcro dots I did, one side should be softer and one should be harder).
  5. Place the other type of velcro dot onto the back of each of the puzzle pieces. (It doesn’t matter which type of dot you use as long as the board and pieces have opposite textures, otherwise they won’t stick together).
  6. Your kids can now have fun putting the pieces onto the board and pulling them off again.

2. Numbers

Learn how to count from 1 to 8 with this fun velcro board. Instead of just placing the numbers onto the dots, your child will have to match the number with its correct name. This is great as it will help not only with counting, but a little bit of reading as well.

6. Stars

This velcro board features a bunch of different colored stars. You can have your kids either place the stars wherever they would like, or for a more interactive activity, you can ask them to only place certain colored stars on the board. Another idea would be to ask them to place a certain number of stars on at one time. For example, “Can you find 3 blue stars and attach them to the board?”

Featuring triangles, circles, ovals and more, this board will help your kids learn their shapes all while keeping them busy! The shapes are also labeled to encourage reading and recognizing the shape names as well.
