The xTool M1 Ultra is an extremely versatile machine that combines four main functions: laser cutting and engraving, inkjet printing, knife cutting and pen drawing. It is an amazing tool for bringing all of your personal crafts and business ideas to life.
One of the things I love doing for my kids birthday party favors or classroom favors is creating something that will not immediately get lost or thrown away. I like favors that double as an activity as well.
A craft that my children love doing is simply painting wood. Sometimes we’ll walk up and down the aisles of our local craft store picking out something for them to paint. Ever since I started using the xTool M1 Ultra I have been super excited to create custom shapes for them to paint.
I thought creating a “decorate your own cupcake” craft would be a fun idea for a kids’ birthday party activity, as a holiday party favor or just as a creative project at home. Extremely Versatile: The xTool M1 Ultra is excellent for allowing seamless transitions between engraving, cutting and so much more. It is a multi-module machine and its processing capability not only saves time but allows for the flexibility for a wide array of projects.
Easy to use Software: The Creative Space program is definitely one of the most user friendly design softwares I have used. It is very easy to learn which enables you to start working on projects quickly. It also works seamlessly between both desktop and mobile platforms.
Snapshot Feature: One of my favorite capabilities is the precision positioning and snapshot feature. It is something that has definitely quickened my workflow.
The xTool M1 Ultra is able to work with a wide range of materials. Wood, paper, stone and leather just to name a few. After my first few projects using this machine, I quickly purchased additional materials and accessories because my creativity was sparked!
The xTool M1 Ultra Riser Base Kit
I strongly recommend incorporating the Riser Base Kit to your creative toolkit. This accessory expands the capability of the machine to accommodate various additional materials and thicknesses. In addition, when used with the rotary tool, it allows you to engrave curved surfaces such as tumblers, mugs, rings and more.
How to cut your own custom wooden shapes
- xTool M1 Ultra
- Riser Base with Honeycomb Panel (highly recommended)
- 1/8” Basswood Plywood Sheets
- Mini Acrylic Paint Set with Brushes (optional)
First, I created an SVG file for this project. If you’d like, feel free to download this file for yourself by simply clicking on the image at the bottom of this post. Once clicked, the file should download to your computer.

After the design has been downloaded, upload it to Creative Space. Make sure to set the material to 3mm Basswood and set the mode to “lasering on a flat surface.”
Next, I attached the wood to the honeycomb riser base by using the provided magnets.
After specifying the distance of the material from the laser, I went onto the processing phase.
Note: In this file, make sure that the black lines are set to “engrave” and the red outline is set to “cut.” You can easily run both operations during the same process.
Shortly after, my cupcakes were engraved and cutout, ready to be used in any fashion you like.
Personally, I purchased some paint pots and let my kids have fun decorating their very own cupcakes. This is a perfect craft for a birthday party or a holiday party. They also make great homemade gifts.
