Paper chains are so much fun to make. All you need are a few simple materials that you most likely already have on hand. The possibilities are endless and they make for great decorations for at home, in the classroom or anywhere else that needs some festive decor.

Materials needed to make a Frankenstein paper chain:

  • Green construction paper (Any other color would work too! You can be as creative as you would like!)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

How to make a Frankenstein paper chain:

To make the Frankenstein paper chain, you can follow the step by step written tutorial. If you would like, you can also watch this video tutorial for a visual guide.

Step 1: Fold a piece of green construction paper in half.

Begin by folding a piece of green construction paper in half longways. You will now need to cut the paper in half along the fold that you just made. For this paper chain you will only be using one half of the piece of paper. If you would like to make the paper chain longer, you can use the other half of the paper to create another chain and then attach them together using tape or glue.

For my sample, I used a 9×12 inch piece of paper. However, you can use any size paper you have. Just make sure that the strip of paper you are making the chain with ends up being a long rectangle.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half three times.

Next, fold the strip of paper in half. Fold it in half a second time, and then fold it again once more for a total of three folds.

Step 3: Unfold the of paper and then refold it again accordion style.

Unfold the strip of paper completely. Next, fold it again, but this time, accordion style fold. This means that you have to fold one section in, turn the page over and then fold the next section in. Repeat this pattern until the entire strip of paper is refolded.

Important: Once you have finished folding the paper, make sure that the right side of the top fold opens up like a book. The left side of the paper will be the folded side. This should not open. By doing this, it will ensure that all of the Frankenstein faces connect to each other.

Step 4: Draw half of the Frankenstein face.

The next step is to draw half of the Frankenstein face. You can follow the example in the photo shown below.

Make sure to have the bolt on the right side of Frankenstein’s face run off the page a bit. Doing this will make sure that the Frankenstein’s will connect together when you open the final paper chain.

Step 5: Cut out Frankenstein’s head and unfold.

Cut out the outline of the Frankenstein face. When cutting out the eyes and the eyebrows, first cut a horizontal slit and then begin cutting out the eye and eyebrow shapes. This is to make sure that there is space between everything.

Unfold the paper to reveal your final Frankenstein paper chain! Four Frankenstein faces should have been created. If you would like to make a longer paper chain, you can repeat this process multiple times and then connect all of the chains together using tape or glue.
