I have a huge stockpile of toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls and wrapping paper rolls. Paper roll projects are definitely some of my favorite. There are so many different types of crafts you can create with them.

Paper roll crafts are great for a wide variety of ages and are great for both at home and in a classroom setting.

Today, I will be sharing how I made this cute rocket ship craft. It is very simple to put together and makes a great toy for the kids once they are done!

rocketship supplies

Supplies needed to make one paper roll rocketship:

  • Paper roll (toilet paper roll, cut up paper towel roll or these paper rolls from Amazon are excellent as well)
  • Construction paper (I used light green, red, orange and yellow)
  • Paint (I used light blue, dark blue and white)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to make the toilet paper roll rocketship:

The first thing you will need to do is paint the base of the toilet paper roll. For mine, I painted the entire roll dark blue. Once that was completely dry I added two white circles and outlined the circles in light blue to form the two windows.

While the paint dries, you can begin cutting out the shapes that form the top of the rocket ship, the two wings and the flames coming from the bottom.

For the wings I cut out two triangle and then folded one edge back slightly to make room for where the glue will be going.

Attach the two wings to the left and right side of the rocketship.

To form the cone shape for the top of the rocketship, cut out a circle and then cut a line through it stopping at the center. Take one edge of the cut portion and wrap it around to form a cone shape. Add glue to hold the edges together.

Place a line of glue around the top of the toilet paper roll and put the cone on top to hold it in place.

For the flames, I first cut out the shape of fire using red construction paper. I then cut a smaller flame shape out of orange and then a smaller shape using yellow. I glued them on top of one another and then attached to the inside of the paper roll with a dab of glue.

Feel free to be creative with this project! Use different colors, add more details and maybe even draw a person inside. The possibilities are endless!

Once you are completely done, let everything dry and then you and your kids have a fun toy that will be great for encouraging imaginative play. And the best part is that they can be proud that they made it themselves!

After I took some pictures for this blog post, I gave my kids the rocketships I made as examples and they are currently in my car. They love to take the rocketships into stores and play with them while we are driving.

So I can definitely say this project was a big hit!
