Whether you are working on this project at home, in a classroom or anywhere else, this project encourages imagination, problem solving and lots of fun!
Kids get to think outside of the box to hide their turkey in plain sight before Thanksgiving dinner arrives.
What is the Disguise a Turkey Project?
The Disguise a Turkey project has definitely become a yearly tradition in many schools during the month of November. The idea is simple: your turkey does not want to be eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. Therefore, it needs a really good disguise!
Kids can choose any character or costume they would like and decorate their turkey to blend in or pretend to be something else entirely.
Some popular disguise ideas include:
- A bumble bee
- A snowman
- A mermaid
- A football player
- A unicorn
- A favorite cartoon character
However, feel free to be as silly and creative as you would like! The more unexpected the better!
Supplies needed:
- The free printable turkey outline (the download link is located below and also at the bottom of this post).
- Crayons, markers or colored pencils
- Glue, Scissors, Construction paper or Printer Paper (optional)
- Anything else you’d like to add! (Googly eyes, pom-poms, glitter, stickers etc).
Allow the kids to go wild and get really creative! It’s super fun because no two turkeys will turn out the same.
How to use the template:
First, print you the turkey template onto regular printer paper or cardstock
Next, begin decorating and disguising the turkey. Kids can draw on clothes, accessories, costumes or anything they can come up with to successfully hide the turkey.
Finally you can encourage to write what their turkey is disguised at at the bottom of the template. Alternatively, you can cut out the turkey and display them wherever you’d like.
They make perfect decorations for bulletin boards, hallway displays or fridge art at home.
Some added benefits to this project aside from just being fun:
- It helps kids express their creativity
- Encourages practicing their fine motor skills
- Allows his to make playful decisions
- Kids can also tell a story about their character’s disguise
This is a wonderful screen-free activity that will be both fun and educational at the same time.

Favorite Supplies:
These are a few of my favorite supplies that I use and LOVE!
- White Cardstock: For most projects, I recommend printing onto cardstock. It is much more durable than standard printer paper and often produces a higher quality print.
- Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top notch choice!
- Kid Friendly Safety Scissors: These are perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
- Glue Sticks: These disappearing purple glue sticks are by far my favorite! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often!
- Lamination Machine: Laminating printables are a great way to make them last longer. If you are planning on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to get a bunch of dry erase markers as well.
- Dry Erase Pockets: Dry erase pockets are a great alternative to using a lamination machine when wanting to make printable games and activities reusable.
- Printer: A high quality printer is always recommended for the best results. If you are in need of a printer this Brother Wireless Printer is a great choice.
