A while back I created this free printable build your own monster craft. It was such a big hit with my kids that they are always asking me to give them similar activities to work on. They have been giving me requests left and right so I have a huge list of “build your own” project to work through. First up on the list is this free printable build a train craft.
There are so many benefits to working on this type of activity and the best part is that both my kids can have fun with it even though they are three years apart and at very different skill levels.
For my younger son, I give him some crayons and the printout and tell him to color in the different parts of the train. I then cut out the pieces and have him choose a piece of colored construction paper to glue them onto. The parts of the train definitely don’t always end up in the correct spots but he definitely enjoys using the glue stick and getting as close as he can.
Now with my older son, he is able to color in all of the pieces, cut them out himself and then glue the train parts together in the proper arrangement. From creativity, to scissor skills there are plenty of benefits that come from this activity. Not to mention him being engaged in a craft and having fun.
Materials needed:
- White printer paper
- Free printable pdf coloring page (located at the bottom of this post)
- Markers, crayons or colored pencils
- Colored construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
First, print out the train coloring page that is located at the bottom of this post. Next, color in the parts of the train using crayons, markers or colored pencils. Cut out all of the pieces and then glue them together in the correct spots. You can glue them to colored construction paper to make for a fun background.

This craft was designed to be printed onto a standard 8.5×11 inch piece of white printer paper. One train craft will print per page.
