How do you play the “How many words can you make…” game?

It is a super fun and challenging game that would be perfect to play at a Halloween themed party, as part of a classroom activity, or just as a rainy day playdate activity. Here is how the game works:

At the top of the page, there will be a word or a phrase. In this case, the word is Halloween. Using each letter only once, you have to see how many different words you are able to come up with using the letters H,A,L,L,O,W,E,E,N. Here’s a hint: There are 128 different words you can make!

Here are a few examples:

  • alone
  • hello
  • wheel
  • hole
  • whale
  • own
  • lean
  • heel
  • and 120 more!

Write down as many words as you can on the numbered lines below. There are 30 lines that are provided on the page, however, if you can keep coming up with more words, feel free to turn the page over and continue to make more words!

How do you win the game?

If you are using this activity in a classroom, you may want to simply have your students come up with as many different words as they can, and that’s it!

Another option would be to make it a big more competitive and challenging. Here is how you can do that:

Make it into a timed competition:
First, set a timer for 3-5 minutes. If you are playing the game with younger children, you may want to set the timer for a longer amount of time.

When someone says “GO,” everyone has to try and make as many words as they can before the time is up. After the timer goes off, whichever player has come up with the most words, wins!

If you would like to make the game even more challenging, you can also incorporate a scattergories element into it. Keep reading to find out how.

How to add a scattergories element into the game:
Have everyone write down as many words as they can before the timer goes up. Try and come up with the most unique words as possible, this is very important to winning the game!

Once the timer goes off, each person can go around the room and read their answers out aloud and compare them to each other. If another person has the same answer as you, both of you must cross that word off of both of their lists. Whichever person has the most unique answer at the end of the game, wins!

Favorite Printable Supplies:

These are a few of my favorite supplies that I use for printable games and activities:

  • White Cardstock: For most projects, I recommend printing onto cardstock. It is much more durable than standard printer paper and often produces a higher quality print.
  • Crayons: A staple in any crafting household. Crayola is always the top notch choice!
  • Kid Friendly Safety Scissors: These are perfect for little kids learning how to use scissors. They cut paper but not fingers or hair!
  • Glue Sticks: These disappearing purple glue sticks are by far my favorite! I love buying them in bulk since we use them so often!
  • Lamination Machine: Laminating printables are a great way to make them last longer. If you are planning on laminating to make games reusable, be sure to get a bunch of dry erase markers as well.
  • Dry Erase Pockets: Dry erase pockets are a great alternative to using a lamination machine when wanting to make printable games and activities reusable.
  • Printer: A high quality printer is always recommended for the best results. If you are in need of a printer this Brother Wireless Printer is a great choice.
